National Poetry Month – Day 29

I watched a poetry ‘gala’ online today to celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Poetry Month with the Academy of American Poets. It was filled with big names like Regina King, Meryl Streep, and Sandra Oh, among others. While it was neat to hear these folks read great poems, it was also a little dull. There were over 6,000 people watching at one point, and the comments flew by and I couldn’t really read them, but I saw one that said something like, “Oh, I thought it would be live with everyone on Zoom.” I had hoped for that but knew it probably wouldn’t be that.

Now some random words.

suddenly summer was upon us
temperature soared into 90s
made for sluggish thoughts
not much movement

to-do list went mostly undone
thirst went mostly unquenched
looked forward to sleep
stayed up anyway

air not circulating
even with all doors open
too early for air conditioner
too late to be sweating in bed

we’re making travel plans
we’re seeing a way forward
without forgetting what we learned
there’s still fight left in us

let’s find a way to cool down
find a way into a dream state
figure out how to stay there
where all of us are healthy
living and free
