It would have been my dad’s 80th birthday today. And also, Prince died 4 years ago. Feeling some things over here.

This Thing Called Life

Prince died on my father’s birthday
April 21st
so now, no matter what,
they’ll always be linked

not that my dad liked Prince’s music
I doubt he could have named one song
my dad was more of a country music fan
I remember days when he would put on a Willie Nelson record
lay down on the floor
eyes closed & just listen
when I think of that image now
let’s say I was 17, still in high school
that would make him 48
the same age I am now
I wish I could ask him how he was doing
talk to him about the pull of the music
the lull of it on his brain
how it maybe let him forget for a minute
the same way I felt today
blasting “Let’s Go Crazy”
dancing in the kitchen
holding back tears as I thought of him
as I thought of this shelter in place
as I heard the words
‘we are gathered here today
to get through this thing called life’
